Lion’s Head Legion Branch 202 News

Submitted by Gerry Tilmans, First VP, Public Relations Officer

At our May meeting when we voted for the Executive Members, Richard Smith chose not to run for the position of President. He presided from 2019 to 2025 and we all truly appreciate his hard work and efforts to keep moving our cause forward. He also carried on as Poppy Chairman successfully over many years prior to and including this time. He attended many Zone and District meetings in order to stay informed. At every meeting he brought in a detailed report of his activities. We must also acknowledge his ongoing contribution of collecting and writing our monthly newsletter, including sending out hard copies to those without email. He steered the Legion through covid via zoom meetings and during the restrictions. Thank you Richard from all of us!

Also choosing not to run, Sharron Colter was Secretary for over 12 years and later added the role of Public Relations Officer, writing these articles for the press. She organized silent auctions, wrote many grant requests, picked up and distributed the mail, and much more. As secretary she was charged with maintaining correspondence, which grew from a half a binder per year to two 3” binders per year! This information must be kept in perpetuity and is stored with previous years that stretch back to 1931 when our Legion received its Charter. Last month Sharron was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her volunteer work in the community for more than ten years. Thank you Sharron from all of us! Her retirement I’m sure won’t mean the end of her writing.

Our Veterans Services / Seniors Chair Nancy Alleyne attended the 83rd Annual review for the 167 Air Marshal Bishop RCAC, on June 11th in Owen Sound. Nancy too chose not to run for this role that she has done for many years. She enjoyed visiting and reaching out to our veterans and seniors. During covid she picked up groceries for many of them. Thank you Nancy for all you have done!

At our meeting on June 5th, we received a visit from Bruce Peninsula District School (BPDS) teacher Emily Cameron and two students who recently returned from their trip to Europe. They showed a video and gave a touching talk about their travels. They visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam, Berg op Zoom Canadian cemetery, the Overloon war museum, Belgium, and Vimy Ridge to name a few places. They came back with an experience of living in history that cannot be taught in a classroom.

On July first we will have a booth at the Pike Bay Community Park at 732 Pike Bay Road from 1-3pm. We will be giving out Maple Leaf cookies and Canadian flags and pins too from Federal MP Alex Ruff Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.

The interest in playing Cornhole continues to grow, and this summer anyone who wants to play can join us Thursday at one o’clock. Cost is only three dollars and you do not need to be a member to play. If weather doesn’t cooperate, bring along your darts as we move indoors when needed.
