Volunteers and Members Needed

Submitted by Sharron Colter,
Secretary and Public Relations Officer

The Northern Bruce Peninsula has endured a stormy snowy winter for several weeks. In spite of the weather, the Lion’s Head Legion has been able to continue the scheduled activities unless highway 6 was closed. Become involved with your local legion to meet new people, to learn new skills, to help with an activity and to attend group activities for the benefit of yourself and your community.

The Lion’s Head Legion Branch 202 welcomes new members. If you are new to the Northern Bruce Peninsula and live near Lion’s Head and Ferndale, a membership to the Legion may be for you. The mission of the Royal Canadian Legions is to remember and assist veterans and their families, to assist retired RCMP officers who served in deployment for Canada and to assist their local community.

The Lion’s Head Legion has many groups meeting at the Legion weekly and monthly to serve the veterans, their families and their community. All activities are provided by volunteers. We need more volunteers to share the workload. We need more members to attend the monthly meetings held on the first Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m.

During the month, you are welcome to join any group that interests you. There are many choices such as Coffee Monday mornings at 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., or hobby scale building on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. with the Bruce Men’s Shed. Some activities include a hike on the Bruce Trail with experienced hikers from the Bruce Trail Club. Attend a Bruce Men’s Shed meeting on the third Saturday of each month at 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. to learn more about their activities within Lion’s Head and area.

Darts are played on Mondays and Thursdays (except the first Thursday of the month) at 1:00 p.m. On Thursdays you can play cribbage or darts. Bring your own darts and pay $3.00 to play.

The Legion has a 50/50 monthly lottery draw, licensed by the Municipality of the Northern Bruce Peninsula. Tickets are available at the legion, at By the Bay in Pike Bay, and at Rachel’s Restaurant and The Shops at 84 Main in Lion’s Head. By purchasing a $1.00 ticket you are providing funds to give back to the community such as the Lion’s Head and District Foodbank, the school public speaking contest, Bruce Peninsula Hospice, Lion’s Head Hospital Foundation, young people’s figure skating ice time, and Chapman House to name some of the donations.

If you are interested in more information contact the secretary of the Legion at 519-793-3473. We do need the members to attend the monthly meetings. We do need volunteers to help on committees and to hold positions on the executive. After more than 10 years as secretary, I am retiring in May. Next membership meeting will be Thursday March 6 at 2:00 p.m.

Stay warm and stay safe in this snowy stormy weather.
