My learning curve continues! A couple of weeks ago, I got a tour of the Thrift Shop, located within the walls of the old settlement church on Highway 6 on the south side of Tobermory. In winter, the Thrift Shop is pretty bare, but soon enough, after a good clean-up and after donations start coming in, it will be filled with household goods that are donated by and will eventually benefit, the entire community.
If you’re tidying up your home or cottage and want to make some donations, the Thrift Shop will be open between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the Victoria Day long weekend. No large household appliances or mattresses, thank you.
The Thrift Shop is one of those win-win-win situations. Household goods are not only kept out of the landfill but made available at bargain prices. In fact, in situations of dire need, they are given away free. The shop is completely run by volunteers, who tell me that they do this because it’s a good cause and also because it’s fun! Proceeds support Tobermory United as well as the Community Outreach Fund. In fact, you will be able to find Yours Truly in the Thrift Shop on Thursday afternoons.
On June 2 at 11 a.m. at Tobermory United, an orientation presentation and lunch will be held for anyone wishing to volunteer at the Thrift Shop this season. Shifts are available from 1-4 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Contact the church at 519-596-2394 or at tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca if you want to join this team!
And… do you have your chicken BBQ ticket yet? It’s May 17 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.! Pick up at the church or delivery only. Call 519-596-2227 or e-mail tuc.treasurer@eastlink.ca.
Yes, these are busy days for folks at Tobermory United, but there is a happy hum to our work as we get back to loving and serving face to face, heart to heart, hand to hand.
