We at the Tobermory Food Bank want to say thank you to all who came by at Peacock’s to have a BBQ’d Hot Dog on May 28th to mark World Hunger Day. We especially appreciate all the businesses who made a donation and had Hot Dogs and Beverages delivered to their location for their staff to enjoy. This event has been part of Tobermory Food Bank for several years now and is supported by so many in this wonderful community.
This year, 176 Hot Dogs were given out compared to 141 last year. After expenses, $870 will be put to good use in our work in assisting those in our community facing Food Insecurity. But this particular BBQ is also about recognizing that Food Insecurity is an increasing problem in all the world.
Our next BBQ is on Saturday June 13th of the Chi-Cheemaun weekend. We will be downtown by the Harbour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Of course, as we always say, follow the aroma of fried onions and you will find us. Have a Hot Dog for lunch, or while you are waiting for the Cardboard Boat Races to start, or anytime you can’t resist having one of our delicious Hot Dogs BBQ’d and served by our dedicated volunteers. The Tobermory Food Bank has three BBQ fundraisers a year – World Hunger Day, Chi-Cheemaun weekend and at the Santa Claus Parade (weather permitting). Otherwise, we depend on the generosity of individuals, organizations, business and churches who donate grocery items and monies.
As the cost of groceries is still increasing weekly, so does the number of clients visiting the Food Bank. The latest Poverty Report (2026) on the Foodbanks Canada website (foodbankscanada.ca/poverty-report-card) gives reasons why 1 in 4 Canadians live in food insecure households. This number has risen 40% over the past two years. This report also gives specific information for our province of Ontario.
