The 4th Annual Old Woman Island 1 Mile Swim was held on August 30 at Black Creek Provincial Park (aka Sandy Beach). The swim event continues to attract participation from locals and cottagers. The winner was cottager Jackie Madden of Little Pine Tree Harbour.
The event also serves as a fundraiser for a regional charity. This year’s recipient is the Georgian Bay Children’s Choir.
Organizers Sahand Amiri and Teresa Nesci are happy to report that they exceeded their fundraising goal of $2,000.00. They say the funds will cover six years (or six students for a full year) of music lessons.
Linda Hawkins, Artistic Director of the Georgian Bay Children’s Choir, says this an important fundraiser for the Choir and they appreciate the donation. Music literacy and accessibility are important goals of the Choir and participants can apply for bursary funding to cover up to 75% of their fees. The Choir has about 30 to 40 kids on a yearly basis. Last year there were 15 kids that required financial assistance. The donation from this event will go directly to assist children requiring financial assistance for the music program.
