Canada Day celebrations are quickly approaching and we will have an information booth at the Pike Bay festival. This year we will offer an activity for kids of all ages: wooden kits that can be painted and assembled, or assembled and painted. There will be bird houses, bird feeders, cars, trucks, and planes to choose from. Donations accepted. The festival runs from 1 o’clock to 3 o’clock at the Community Park at 732 Pike Bay Rd.
On Saturday June 14th Bruce Men’s Shed entered our boat “Flamin’ Idiots” for the second year in the Chi-Cheemaun cardboard boat races. Last year Ross said that only a Flamin Idiot would want to paddle in it, which he did. The boat survived last year’s race and after a number of hours of rebuilding she showed up sporting new colours and new paddlers.
As you can imagine with a group of retired men entering this race, the members who were available to attend the race could not kneel or sit in the boat to paddle due to hip, leg, and knee issues. So one of our intrepid members asked about Tobermory for anyone “crazy enough” to get in and race. By luck and good fortune, he found visiting teenagers Felix and Audrey who were either crazy enough or Flamin Idiots enough to pilot the boat successfully. Successful in that it floated, finished the race, and they survived!

Since our last article, we have made great progress in building the Lion’s Head Harbourside Music stage by the marina. The majority of the man hours has been by the musicians of Harbourside Music, along with some days put in by a few of our members. The stage will be finished in time for the music festival kick-off at the end of the month.
Mark your calendars for Saturday August 2. Bruce Men’s Shed will host a booth at the Wiarton Homecoming festival to promote our group’s activities, but more importantly, we will be running the pig roast this year. Tickets will be available at the beginning of August as will more information.
Please note that our monthly Saturday meetings are canceled until the fall. Every Monday morning we meet for coffee 9am-11am at Canadian Legion Branch 202, 6 Hellyer Road on Highway 6 just north of Ferndale. Feel free to drop in for coffee. Doors open at 8:45. If you would like further information on how to get involved with the Men’s Shed movement, please contact us at brucemensshed@gmail.com or call Gerry at (519) 793–3005.
