Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United
Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer
A huge thank you goes out to David Warder and the Community Easter Cantata Choir for their performances of “God So Loved,” a Good Friday choral performance. The experience of Holy week was enriched for many people throughout the peninsula with three performances of this exquisitely prepared cantata, including one at Tobermory United on April 13.
Holy Week was a rich and meaningful time at Tobermory United, with a tender and moving service on Maundy Thursday, the experience of the cantata to honour Good Friday, and then the joyous celebration of resurrection on Easter morning. It means a lot of decorating and re-decorating the sanctuary, but it’s done with intention and love. We continue to celebrate the Easter season, but this is the time of year when things get really busy at Tobermory United.
Planning for the 2025 season of the Tobermory Thrift Shop, for example, is well underway! The Thrift Shop will be open to accept donations on the Victoria Day long weekend, May 17, 18 and 19, from 1:00 to 4:00pm. If no longer needed household items have been piling up through the winter, you are welcome to drop them off at the Thrift Shop, 7101 Highway 6! Sales will begin June 7. The Thrift Shop is a volunteer-run enterprise, and volunteers come from within the church and also the wider community. Usually volunteers pick one day of the week to offer their time between 1 and 4 p.m. A volunteer orientation lunch will occur June 6 at noon at Tobermory United. This is fun and rewarding work! Contact the church at 519-596-2394 or tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca if you’re interested.
Spring Chicken BBQ May 14th
As well, we are preparing for the Spring Chicken BBQ, which will be held May 14th! Tobermory United hosts two chicken BBQs per year as a fundraising initiative, but they are also beloved community events, very much looked forward to. Tickets are $25.00 and include a half chicken, barbecued to perfection; a baked potato; coleslaw; a roll and dessert. A vegetarian option is available, if ordered in advance. The Chicken BBQ will operate on a drive-through basis at Tobermory United between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. Though our amazing volunteers will bring your dinners to your car with joy and efficiency, you can also arrange for delivery. Call 519-596-2227 to order tickets, or e-mail tucbbqtickets@outlook.com.
