Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United

Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer

On May 15th, a familiar plume of smoke could be seen emanating from the Tobermory United Church parking lot – time for the Spring Chicken BBQ, which sold out! Profound apologies to those who wanted a dinner but could not receive one. The ordering is an inexact science, and 400 chicken dinners seemed like enough!  All of those dinners left the doors of Tobermory United in an operation that was not only efficient and seamless, but fun!

A thousand thanks to everyone who volunteered, sold tickets, bought tickets, baked tarts, packed food, made deliveries or any other of the tasks that needed to be done! Many thanks also to the local businesses who support the barbecue by buying tickets for staff or offering supplies.  The summer barbecue will be held Saturday August 3. Both of these events are significant fundraisers for Tobermory United.

Another significant fundraiser is the operation of the Tobermory Thrift Shop each summer at 7101 Highway 6. Formerly the location of the settlement church, the Thrift Shop, like the chicken barbecue, is a Tobermory institution.

Many thanks to everyone who dropped off donations on the Victoria-Day long weekend. We’re off to an excellent start! Donations will be received Monday and Tuesday from 1-4pm all summer long, starting on May 27. The Thrift Shop is open for sales Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, also from 1-4pm. Opening day will be June 13th!

Folks at Tobermory United are looking forward to participating in a service created by all the Tobermory churches on Chi-cheemaun weekend. The service will take place June 16th at 10:30 a.m. at Light and Life Chapel. The Ladies of Note will make a musical appearance! We have decided, however, not to sell pies downtown that weekend, although this decision was made after some of the advertising was already released. After just making 400 tarts for the Chicken BBQ, pies seemed a little daunting. Know your limits, right?

What else is new at Tobermory United? Well, the Pride flag will be mounted above the entrance to the church on June 1. Tobermory United never looks so good as when the Pride flag flies for the month of June! Many people look forward to Tobermory United’s Pride service, which, this year, will be held June 30.
