Sources of Knowledge (SOK) is thrilled to announce three exciting events as part of its upcoming SOK Talk Series. This fall and winter, SOK is offering a variety of engaging presentations, from a musical evening, to inspiring talks by renowned environmental filmmakers and a celebrated photojournalist. All events will be held at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre, providing an inviting space for the community to come together and enjoy these experiences.
1. SOK Sings 2.0 – Wednesday October 9th, 2024, Doors Open at 6:30 PM
The series begins with SOK Sings 2.0, an energetic evening of local music on Wednesday, October 9th. Doors open at 6:30 PM with music in the lobby, and the main show starts at 7:00 PM in the theatre. This event is a follow-up to this summer’s successful SOK Sings and will once again be led by local musicians like Marty Oblak, Jon Newitt, and Nick Ferrence.
Featuring a lineup of some of our favourite local musicians and songwriters, SOK Sings 2.0 promises to be a fun evening. In addition to great music, the event also serves as a fundraiser for SOK’s community initiatives. Tickets are $15 in advance on our website (www.sourcesofknowledge.ca) and from SOK board members, or $20 at the door (if available). Be sure to secure your tickets for a night of great music and community spirit!
2. Inspired Planet: Beneath the Surface of the Great Lakes – Thursday November 14th, 2024, 7:00 PM
On Thursday, November 14th, at 7:00 PM, the SOK Talk series will feature Yvonne Drebert and Zack Melnick, the award-winning filmmaking duo behind Inspired Planet Productions. Over the past two decades, Drebert and Melnick have documented Canada’s natural and historical wonders, with their films being spotlighted on Canadian television and receiving nominations like the 2021 Canadian Screen Award for Striking Balance.
For this talk, the duo will delve into the fascinating underwater world of the Great Lakes using cutting-edge remotely operated vehicles. Their talk, Inspired Planet: Beneath the Surface of the Great Lakes, will showcase their exploration of rarely seen freshwater ecosystems.
One exciting highlight of their work is the discovery of the shipwreck Africa, a long-lost vessel that sank in Lake Huron in 1895. Attendees will be treated to breathtaking underwater footage and a sneak peek of their upcoming documentary, which offers insights into these hidden realms. This presentation promises to deepen the audience’s understanding of freshwater conservation and the ecosystems we all depend on.
This event is free to attend with donations encouraged. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn more about the aquatic wonders right in our backyard.
3. Willy Waterton: Bear Encounters – Thursday December 5th, 2024, 7:00 PM
Wrapping up the 2024 SOK Talk Series, on Thursday, December 5th at 7:00 PM, renowned photojournalist Willy Waterton will present an illustrated talk titled Bear Encounters. This presentation will take attendees on an extraordinary journey through Waterton’s experiences photographing polar bears in the high Arctic, Western Hudson Bay, and black bears on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula.
With over 35 years of experience as a photojournalist, Waterton has documented wildlife and landscapes in some of the most remote areas of the world. His talk will also highlight new findings about the health of these bear populations, along with information on a bear species that has recently expanded its range in the Hudson Bay lowlands. Waterton, who has earned over 100 provincial and national photography awards, brings a wealth of expertise and passion to this event, making it a must-attend for nature lovers and photographers alike.
As with other SOK talks, this event is by donation, with proceeds going to support future programming.
