At 1 p.m. on September 15, 2024 participants gathered at the parking lot of the Bruce Peninsula District School for the annual Lion’s Head Terry Fox Run. Present were over 60 walkers, cyclists, joggers, on rollerblades, in strollers; representative of all generations, families, friends and dogs, some participating in the Run for the first time, many doing it repeatedly over the years. Braving the hot temperatures and humidity the participants headed down Main Street to Isthmus Bay, choosing to do the full 10 km back to the school or any distance in between.

The Terry Fox Run has been a popular community event since 1991, this year raising $19,150.00, with $15,533.00 coming from online donations and $3,617.00 donated in person at the event or donated afterwards, including approximately $1,000.00 from the Annual Fall Sailboat races.

Organizers, the Martens Family, wish to thank the participants and the community for their awesome support year after year. “We would like to thank everyone who took part in the event and donated anyway they could. It was our first year ever where we sold out of t-shirts and it was great to see so many people wearing their old and new Terry Fox shirts for the day.” said the Martens.

“We would also like to thank Hellyer’s Foodland for donating all the hotdogs for a post event BBQ for the participants; which was a big hit, and to Jamie Hastings for his help volunteering his time to put up the road banner each year.

We’d like to thank our amazing water station volunteers Jennie Rauchfleisz and her husband. As well as Grace Bray and Dianne Tomson. Those water stations were a busy spot this year, with the weather being 26 degrees celsius and close to 34 C on the tarmac.”

The Martens did not reach their goal of 200 participants for 2024, but were pleased with the turnout, stating “the participants we did have were fantastic and we hope to see them all again next year.”

New Location for 2025; Earlier Start Time

In 2025, the Registration area for the Terry Fox Run will move from the Bruce Peninsula District School’s parking lot to the Lion’s Head Beach Pavilion and at an earlier start time. With the progressively hotter Septembers, the relocation to the Beach pavilion and an earlier time in the day will allow community members and event participants to enjoy the beach area and lake, access washroom facilities, and hopefully have more shade and cooler temperatures.
