March seemed to bring with it star power! On March 21, BPDS students in grades 7-12 were lucky enough to have a visit from Wyatt Black, who was a contestant on the History Channel’s series Alone – handy he is also Mrs. E Cameron’s cousin. Wyatt placed second on the tenth season of the show, proving his survival skills in the Canadian North. He was invited to come speak to our Outers students, Film Studies class, and the grade 7 and 8 classes, about his knowledge of the outdoors and his time on the show. Wyatt talked about the importance of nature and spending time outside. He then spent the afternoon in the woods with the Outers class, teaching them how to make a fire and identify trees and other plants. What a cool day for our students!

The BPDS drama club is also about to have their time in the limelight! Mark your calendars for Heist Quest, a hilarious comedy written by Dana Schwab and produced by Pioneer Drama Service. This play will have you rolling off your seats with laughter and confusion. Is it a heist? Is it a quest? You will need to buy a ticket to find out! Tickets will go on sale April 4 and will be available through school cash online. Check out the BPDS Facebook page for the link or email Ms. Tara Stanton (tara_stanton@bwdsb.on.ca). Show times are Friday April 19 and Saturday April 20 at 7:00pm, and Sunday April 22 at 3:00pm. The cost is $12.00 for adults and $10 for students/ seniors.

The BPDS Europe Trippers would like to shine a spotlight on the Lion’s Head Rotary Club and thank them for their generous donation to the trip. The Rotary Club is very supportive of our students, regularly making donations to the school and providing scholarships to our graduating students. The Europe trippers are thankful for their generosity!

We continue to be grateful to the community who help support our students, who are all stars in our eyes!

Report from the Principal’s Office

Submitted by Brenda Brewer, Principal, and Breanna Heels, Vice-Principal

We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter long weekend, and we are now into what we like to call Apr-May-June! Hold onto your hats as we fly our way to the end of the school year – but hopefully not too quickly because these next few months are some of the best!

As a Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) Sustainable Future School and UNESCO school, we focus on the UN Global Goals and embed them in our classrooms. Each month, we focus on a different Global Goal. Our focus for April is Climate Action!

In February, BPDS celebrated love, kindness and inclusion with lots of activities around Valentine’s Day, the UNESCO club leading discussions about Black History Month in elementary classrooms, Student Council creating a Kindness Board where students could take or leave a kind note, and Pink Shirt Day which raised awareness around bullying. We have been focusing on the UN Global Goal: Reduced Inequalities and learning about ways to fill each other’s buckets and promote equity within our school and community. Elementary classes made a heart full of hearts as students reflected on buckets fillers and how we can make our school and community more equitable.

In March, the UN Global Goal was Gender Equality. Students used the “From Where I Stand” lesson from the World’s Largest Lesson that surveyed students on the gender of their local leaders – you can see the results in the chart below. The UNESCO club led classes in a discussion on gender stereotypes and then students wrote gender stereotypes on sticky notes and ripped the notes to symbolize breaking the stereotypes!

For April, the UN Global Goal is Climate Action, and we will share lots with you in the next issue, especially around our Earth Day events! This month, Ms. Rosenburg is also taking some students from UNESCO Club to a LSF UNESCO Conference, so we will share more about that next issue as well. Mrs. Heels, Mrs. Burgess, Mrs. Myles and Ms. Rosenburg are also heading to Belfountain Public School, another LSF Sustainable Future School, this month to engage and learn from other schools who also embed UN Global Goals into their classrooms. We can’t wait to learn more about initiatives in other schools and grow our Sustainable Future School community!
