On Saturday, August 19th, the Bruce Men’s Shed hosted a general meeting at the Lion’s Head Legion where Dante Hunter of the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association presented on the ‘Dark Skies’ across the Northern Bruce Peninsula. The ‘Dark Skies’ biosphere is one of 699 global locations where many can view the Milky Way with the naked eye. During the summer, Dante presents on the ‘Dark Skies’ at various locations across the Peninsula, with location information from the Biosphere Association available online and in the Peninsula Press.

On Tuesday, August 22nd, the Bruce Men’s Shed participated in two events. In an interview with HelpAge Canada, some members provided testimonials regarding how being involved with the Men’s Shed movement has helped build male companions while being active with various projects and activities. HelpAge Canada identified the Bruce Men’s Shed based on the positive growth that is being recognized by other organizations for its actions. In a separate outing, some men convoyed various classic cars down the Peninsula to participate in the Sauble Beach ‘Show & Shine’ event held Tuesday afternoons along the waterfront. It’s definitely a worthwhile event to take in before the end of the summer passes us by.

Members agreed by consensus at the August general meeting to explore set dates for scheduling projects and activities. Projects like woodworking would be slated for Tuesdays and Thursdays, while activities like our series of ‘Easy Hikes’ could occur on Wednesdays. Several upcoming activities and events are being planned for the Fall, such as a 3-D printing workshop and model workshop, along with a return of our series of ‘Easy Hikes’ across the Peninsula where the men can enjoy a hike in the company of other men while learning a little more about the area that surrounds us.

Also, the Shed has plans for a September event after the Labour Day weekend where men can bring their spouses/partners/loved ones while showing off their hobbies and enjoying some fellowship with a fun chili cookoff.

Monthly Meeting Date: Starting in August, the Bruce Men’s Shed will host general meetings on the third Saturday of each month. The next general meeting will occur on Saturday, September 16th, with a presentation on a local fishery habitat and a follow-up site visit on another date afterward.

General meetings are held at the Lion’s Head Legion, Branch #202 (Hwy 6 north of Ferndale), starting at 9:00 a.m. Saturday meetings will be for general meetings only as various projects, events, and activities will/may be held on other dates outside the regularly scheduled monthly meeting dates.
