New Innovative Pilot Project Aims to Open Virtual Seniors’ Centre in North Bruce

Submitted by Sharron Colter

Seniors’ Centres Without Walls (SCWW) is a new innovative project starting on the Northern Bruce Peninsula in November 2020.

Seniors’ Centres Without Walls have been opening virtually across Ontario due to the fact that Senior Centres, Legions and other gathering places have been closed for several months due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Many seniors and other residents are following the restrictions that are in place. Therefore, I am happy to announce that the Northern Bruce Peninsula Community Support Advisory Action Committee has partnered with the United Way Bruce Grey, the Ontario Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility, the Older Adults Centres Associations of Ontario and the Good Companions to begin a pilot project on the Northern Bruce Peninsula.

The sessions can be accessed either by phone or Zoom Video according to the planned sessions on the November Calendar (see ad below). The sessions will address laughter to be healthy, phone in chat sessions, Remembrance for November, and sessions for improving memory and understanding Dementia and Alzheimers. Community members are invited to host a chat session, musicians on the peninsula are invited to entertain over the phone and community members are encouraged to ask for speakers on specific topics. A monthly calendar with topics/chat sessions will be available at the end of each month for information about registration.

It is hoped that a Seniors’ Centre Without Walls will grow in participants with more hosts and speakers. This program, SCWW Bruce Grey will help seniors and residents connect with, and contact others, in a safe environment from the comfort of their living rooms, especially with winter approaching on the peninsula. The phone in option recognizes that many seniors do not have computers.
