The Tobermory Thrift Shop, an initiative of Tobermory United Church, has decided to dedicate August 27 as a fundraising day for the Fire Relief Fund – developed to support residents who need assistance with essential needs as they return to their homes following restoration from a fire that occurred in the Bradley Davis Seniors Apartments on June 23.
The Thrift Shop will open an hour earlier that day, at noon, with a hot-dog BBQ, the proceeds of which, as well as all sales for the day, will be donated to the Fire Relief Fund.
The Fire Relief Fund has been established by Tobermory Community Outreach in partnership with The Meeting Place, Tobermory. All residents of the Bradley Davis apartments were displaced from their homes for at least a month. Some have been able to move back in; others are still waiting while restoration takes place. Each resident has been offered a small sum from the fund to help with the replacement of groceries and other needed items. Residents who require more assistance are invited to fill out an application, which will be reviewed by a committee from Tobermory Community Outreach.
The Fire Relief Fund is only accepting donations until August 31. Donations of cash or cheques may be dropped off at the Meeting Place at 20 Centennial Drive during business hours, 9 to 5, Tuesday to Thursday. Cheques can be made out to “the Meeting Place, Tobermory,” with “Fire Relief Fund’ in the memo. E-transfers may be sent to communityservices@tobermorymeetingplace.com. More than $1,000.00 has been received by the fund to date. It is hoped that at least $5,000.00 can be raised.
