World Day of Prayer Features the Voices of Women in Palestine

Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer

Many thanks to all who attended or helped with the Tobermory United annual pancake supper on February 13. Heather Munn has coordinated this event for 14 years, and once again, she made it look easy! More than a hundred people were treated to sausages, ham, pancakes, baked beans, devilled eggs, fruit and goodies and a time of fellowship with friends and neighbours. Donations were collected at the door and amounted to almost $1400.00! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

The Season of Lent, a time of prayer and discernment, has begun, and at Tobermory United, we’ve got a prayer tree installed in the sanctuary. Each week, all are invited to add a prayer in the form of a colourful piece of fabric or ribbon to the tree. By Easter, we should have a colourful tree filled with our prayers at the front of the church!

These days, we’re also preparing to be part of a community effort to host the 2024 World Day of Prayer service. This is a tradition that has been going on for almost a hundred years, and it involves Christians from more than 170 countries praying the same things on the same day, with a focus on issues relevant to women and children. Each year, one specific country prepares the service from their perspective and, though the writing committees are chosen years in advance, it seems significant that this year’s resources come from Palestine. The World Day of Prayer will take place on March 1 at Tobermory United at 2:00 p.m.

Tobermory United Church Council continues its important work. Recently we decided to take a long hard look at the Northern Bruce Peninsula Climate Action Plan. Over the next few months, Council members will be discerning how Tobermory United can better align itself with the initiatives and targets included in the plan.

As winter turns to spring, it is a blessing to do this work in this place.

Rev. Sheryl Spencer is the minister at Tobermory United Church.
