Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United
Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer
Tobermory United got to be part of a very special event on May 20, when Dan Norman (75) and Miriam Morris (76), from Oak Harbour, Ohio, chose to be married at Tobermory United Church. Dan and Miriam, who both lost their spouses several years ago, spent their first vacation as a couple in Tobermory. They loved it. Rather than have a big wedding and try to get all of their blended families together, Dan and Miriam decided to come back to Tobermory and elope! A short, but meaningful service was held in the church with locals, Rob and Gwen Groves, as witnesses, and Martha Aitkin as the official video recorder! Dan and Miriam are back in Ohio now, and very thankful to have had their special day in Tobermory. Many thanks to Brian at the Chamber of Commerce for putting Dan in touch with Tobermory United!
The Tobermory Thrift Shop is now open for sales! Many thanks to all who have dropped off donations and to the Thrift Shop volunteers, who have been working steadily to get the Thrift Shop ready to open on June 6. The Thrift Shop, located at 7101 Highway 6, is now open for both sales and donations throughout the summer every day of the week between 1 and 4 p.m., except for Wednesdays and Sundays. Tobermory United is grateful to the community for helping us to carry on this Tobermory tradition!
Summer in the Spirit, a joint initiative of Tobermory United and St. Edmund’s Anglican, whose aim is to “Build Community, Honour the Sacredness of Place and Celebrate Spirit,” is happily preparing for the summer of 2026! The series will begin July 22 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., with a sacred fire, teachings and ceremony offered by Nawash Three Fires on the grounds of St. Edmund’s Anglican. Summer in the Spirit will continue every Wednesday evening through to September with events that folks have come to love – Brews and Hymns at the Legion; Songs of the Canadian Spirit with Brian Taylor and friends; a meditative forest walk; a concert in partnership with Music on the Bruce, and more! A schedule and more info to follow in coming weeks!
On June 14, all the churches in Tobermory will come together for a joint service at 10:30 a.m at Light and Life Chapel to celebrate Chi-Cheemaun Sunday. This service will be led by Pastor Lloyd Oakey with contributions from each of the four Tobermory churches. Rousing nautical hymns and a blessing of the boats will be part of the service. The service welcomes special musical guests, the local a cappella singing group, the Ladies of Note!
