A challenge was put out to the congregation of Tobermory United Church for the 40 days of Lent.  The challenge was to put aside one Food Bank item or one dollar for each day of Lent with the items or money to be brought to the Church on Easter Sunday.  This greatly benefited Tobermory Food Bank as 123 kg of grocery items and 210 dollars was collected.

This challenge was brought to the congregation by a member Heike Domke-Talbot.  A very special way for some folks to observe Lent, rather than giving something up for Lent, instead giving something. Another way that our caring community thinks about the needs of others.

Again, with community support the Tobermory Food Bank distributed 28 Easter Hampers to ensure that everyone would have a celebratory meal for Easter.  As always, the Hampers contained more items than would go into an Easter meal.

In many media outlets recent reports from across Ontario and indeed Canada tell us there has been an increase in those needing to visit a Food Bank.  Our Food Bank is seeing an increase in numbers.  The Second Harvest or Food Rescue that Peacock’s Foodland so generously participates in, is a great help in addressing some of the needs.  But donations of certain items would be appreciated.  For example: cereal, canned tuna, salmon or ham.  Also dried pasta meals such as Sidekicks and canned pasta meals.  And of course soup, regular canned soup or Chunky style.  And pet food is also needed, as we know if someone has a pet, they are also part of the family and need to be fed as well.

Donations can be deposited at the Tobermory Post Office in the bin provided.  Also, donations can be taken to the Food Bank during regular Food Bank hours, Tuesday 1-3 p.m.  The Tobermory Food Bank is located in the Meeting Place Building.

With the rising cost of food, we know there are many who are facing food insecurity for the first time.  If you have a need to visit our Food Bank, please know that all is held in confidence and our mission to help those who need assistance.  And if you know someone who is in need but reluctant to take what we know to be a difficult step to visit a Food Bank, please assure them that they are not alone.  Or perhaps offer to come with them for the first visit.
