Human Remains Found Near Dunk’s Bay Dated to 1426–1452

Since Saugeen Ojibway Nation’s initial update in August 2025, additional investigation and scientific testing have been completed regarding the human remains discovered on August 14, 2025 in the northern area of the Saugeen Peninsula. Radiocarbon analysis confirmed that the individual lived between 1426 and 1452, confirming that the remains are those of a Saugeen Ojibway Nation Ancestor. 

The disturbance of ancestral remains is a matter of deep spiritual and cultural importance for the Saugeen Ojibway Nation. This confirmation affirms what our people have always known, that our ancestors have lived on and cared for these lands since time immemorial. 

Saugeen Ojibway Nation is working with the appropriate officials to ensure the Ancestor is respectfully repatriated so that next steps can proceed in accordance with our cultural protocols.
