Mark Coleman, Manager of Parks and Facilities for MNBP, gave an informative presentation at the May 10th Men’s Breakfast. Originally from Kitchener/Waterloo, he currently lives in Tara. He graduated from Sir Sanford Fleming College in Lindsay as a Forest Recreation Technician and a Natural Resources Law Enforcement Technologist guided by his passion for the outdoors. A Parks and Public Works budget has been presented to Council but not yet approved. Budgeting for Parks is in the order of $2 million and for Public Works, between $2 and $4 million.
In our experience, we are all keen to see capital improvements which affect our daily lives (e.g., roads, parks, harbours) but as taxpayers, we want to ensure the spending is efficient. Some of the planned spending include:
Roads and Bridges
– 14km of Micro surfacing (targeted paving 475K);
– Bridge replacement at Heron Pt., Ira Lake, Cherry Hill (190K);
– tar and chip road surfacing projects (475K);
– Little Cove Rd reconstruction;
– Tobermory & Lion’s Head sidewalk improvements (680K);
– Legion St., Tammy Cove and Lakeshore road improvements;
– New but used sweeper unit (70K).
Water, Sewer and Waste Management
– Water and sewage improvements study (25K);
– Sewer capital improvements (442.5K);
– Lion’s Head water systems;
– Tobermory sewer main servicing (500K).
– St. Edmunds landfill closure study
Harbour Improvements
– Lion’s Head docks A&B replacement (348K);
– Lion’s Head fuel pump replacement (80K – cost recovery via fuel sales);
– Lion’s Head electrical infrastructure (52K, also cost recovery).
Parks & Recreation
– Servicing pick-up truck replacement (60K);
– Benches and waste receptacles (80k);
– Lion’s Head pickleball court resurfacing & upgrades (200K);
– Tobermory tennis court concrete pad/seating (12K);
– Pike Bay & Ferndale playground replacements (170K);
– Ice surfacing machine replacement with electrical machine (160K);
– New arena score clock (20K).
Fire Services
– Tanker truck replacement (230-270K);
– Fire prevention cleaning (30K);
– Coveralls replacement (30K);
– Communication upgrades:
– New bunker gear;
– New fire hall generator (17K).
Miscellaneous
– Tobermory library stairs and retaining wall (150K);
– St. Edmunds Museum window replacement (25K);
– Davis cabin restoration (25K);
– Rotary Hall upgrades/accessibility (47.5K);
– Website accessibility (20K);
– Asset management software (60K);
– 3 heat pumps (35K);
