Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United

Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer

Have you got your tickets yet for the Spring Chicken BBQ, May 14? If not, it’s not too late, you can pick up a dinner at Tobermory United at 5 Brock St. between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $25.00, and each dinner includes a half chicken, baked potato, coleslaw and dessert. Thank you to everyone who supports this Tobermory tradition, a major fundraiser for Tobermory United Church!

Speaking of fundraisers, the Tobermory Thrift Shop, a community initiative of Tobermory United Church, has some important dates coming up. Donations will be accepted throughout the Victoria Day long weekend, May 17, 18 and 19 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. A volunteer orientation and lunch will occur at Tobermory United on June 6 at noon, and the Thrift Shop will open its doors for sales on June 7. Interested in volunteering? Volunteers usually pick one day a week, with shifts starting at 1:00 p.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m. This is fun and meaningful work that supports a circular economy! Contact the church at 519-596-2394 or tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca.

Tobermory United is also looking forward to some upcoming special services. On May 25, we welcome violist Dominik Franken as guest musician. On June 1, Sheila Peacock will be interviewed by her son Spencer Adams on the topic of relationship to land. On June 8, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada with a lot of history, some special music and a potluck following the service. On June 15th, all the Tobermory churches will join together at Tobermory United to celebrate Chi-Cheemaun Sunday!

Plans are also underway for Summer in the Spirit, a series of events hosted in partnership with St. Edmunds Anglican and many other community partners. Summer in the Spirit has the goals of Building Community, Honouring the Sacredness of Place and Celebrating Spirit. Events will begin in early July. Watch for details!
