In Tobermory the March Break started out on a lovely sunny Saturday with the rescheduled Family Day Event, sponsored by the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula (MNBP), being held at the Community Centre and outdoors at the nearby baseball diamond. The winter snow and cold temperatures lasted just long enough for some local children and their families to play outdoors on March 8th, skating on the slowly melting ice rink and building colourful snow creations.
The Peninsula Bruce Trail Club (PBTC) kept a bonfire burning along-side the rink providing opportunities for making yummy snacks out of graham crackers, melted chocolate and marshmallows. We call them “S’Mores” because we want some more! Sparky the Fire Dog was on hand to ensure the fire was managed safely and that the children had fun!
Indoors at the Community Centre, Marty Oblak kept lively tunes playing on the sound system, while various community groups, including Parks Canada, Light and Life Chapel and Tobermory United Church, provided crafting opportunities and activities including making paper snowflakes, cookie decorating, sticker fun and temporary tattoos.
Tobermory Primary Place provided coffee, hot chocolate and hot dogs all by donation. The Bruce County Library Bookmobile was in the parking lot from 11am until 2pm lending books and encouraging new library memberships.
MNBP counsellors Rod Anderson and Aman Sohrab (was that him in the Sparky costume?) were seen to be enjoying themselves alongside staff members, Madie Barker (MNBP Museum and Recreation Programmer) and Mark Coleman (Parks and Facilities Manager). Madie expressed her gratitude to the community for coming out to enjoy and support the Family Day event and is hopeful that those who were fundraising for their programs found it to be worthwhile.
Madie is “excited to be able to offer more recreational programming in the future” and invites anyone who is interested in being involved to reach out to her at mbarker@northernbruce.ca or by phone at 1 833 793 3537, extension 409.
