St. Edmunds Bruce Peninsula Museum has been buzzing with excitement this July, hosting a series of enriching events that celebrate local traditions and historical themes.
Over the past few weeks, St. Edmunds Bruce Peninsula Museum hosted the Top of the Bruce Wood Carvers Club during our ‘Crafting Traditions’ event on July 20th and 31st, bringing the community together to celebrate creativity, heritage, and hands-on craftsmanship. Attendees enjoyed captivating wood carving demonstrations, weaving and spinning demonstrations, and Indigenous storytelling sessions led by Priscilla Tobey. Visitors of all ages tried their hand at carving soap art and weaving masterpieces on handmade popsicle stick looms. The vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, filled with laughter and creativity, highlighted the importance of preserving traditional skills and fostering community connections.
Our summer programming continued with a special event on July 23rd, dedicated to Tobermory’s rich fishing and ferry history. Attendees had the unique opportunity to learn about celestial navigation from Bluewater Astronomical Society experts Brett Tatton, Richard Suchow and Frank Williams. Visitors practiced their nautical knots with Blue Heron’s Travis Kinch and heard captivating ferry stories from former Chi-Cheemaun captain Kerry Adams. Kids were able to practice their cardboard boat making skills and create sailor hats of their own at our outdoor craft table!

On July 27th, we dug into the past with Archaeology Day. This event featured local archaeologist Scarlett Janusas, who showcased a range of artifacts and gave a fascinating presentation on her team’s past digs and dives. The day was a hit with our younger visitors, when they got their hands dirty in our mock dig site, collecting treasures and trinkets to take home with them.
The museum committee and staff want to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended our events so far. Special gratitude goes to our dedicated volunteers and presenters whose hard work ensured each event ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all.
Looking ahead, we have numerous events scheduled for August, and we warmly invite everyone to join in the fun!
Digitization Day August 17th
Mark your calendars for Digitization Day on August 17th, where attendees can learn how to preserve their precious memories by scanning and digitizing old photos, documents, and memorabilia with the help of our expert staff. Bring your kids to create family trees and scrapbooking pages upstairs!
Crafting Traditions August 21st
The final Crafting Traditions event on August 21st will also be a highlight, featuring soap carving, popsicle stick looms and informative demonstrations – this the only date the talented wood turners will be present—don’t miss out!

Collectors Showcase End of August
We are especially excited about our Collectors Showcase at the end of the month, and we need your help to make it a success! We are inviting collectors of all kinds to participate—whether you have a prized collection of hockey cards, Pokémon cards, stamps, coins, rocks, antique lamps, old bottles, comic books, or any other unique items, we would love to feature them.
This event is a fantastic opportunity to share your collections with the community, connect with fellow enthusiasts, and inspire the next generation of collectors.
Without registrants, we cannot run this event, so please sign up and help us create a memorable experience for all. To register or for more information, visit our website: https://www.northbrucepeninsula.ca/museum.
