Bruce Peninsula, Ontario – October 6, 2024 – On October 6th, the scenic routes of the Bruce Peninsula came alive with the sound of whirring bike tires and cheers of support as the annual Bruce Peninsula Gravel Gran Fondo took place, drawing 400 avid cyclists from across the region. The cloudy windy start gave way to a spectacular sunny day! With its stunning landscapes and challenging terrain, the event not only showcased the beauty of the area but also raised an impressive estimated $60,000 for the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association (BPBA).

Organized by passionate volunteers, the race featured an incredible 95 individuals who dedicated their time and effort to ensure the event ran smoothly. From setting up food and water stations, to managing the start and finish lines, the volunteers played a crucial role in creating an unforgettable experience for participants. Jean Campbell and her crew of volunteer bakers made 100s of butter tarts, cookies, squares and more that all of the riders eagerly consumed!

The success of this year’s Gran Fondo was particularly remarkable given that it booked up quickly without any formal advertising. Relying solely on word-of-mouth promotion, cycling enthusiasts flocked to register, resulting in a full roster and leaving over 100 hopeful riders on a waiting list. The grassroots nature of the event highlights the growing interest in gravel biking and the vibrant cycling community in the Bruce Peninsula.

The race offered participants a choice of four different routes -115 km, 80 km, 56 km, and 30 km – each presenting unique challenges and breathtaking views. Riders navigated through a mix of gravel roads and picturesque trails, taking in the stunning fall foliage and the natural beauty that the peninsula is renowned for.

“This event is more than just a ride; it’s a celebration of our community and the incredible landscapes we have here,” said race organizer Mike Campbell. “We are thrilled with the turnout and the support we received, especially from our volunteers. Their dedication is what makes this event possible.”

The funds raised from the Gran Fondo will significantly benefit the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association (BPBA.ca), which is committed to conserving the natural environment of the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula and promoting sustainable practices. The association plans to use the funds to enhance local conservation projects, community education programs, and initiatives that aim to protect the area’s unique biodiversity.

Our sponsors played a vital role in the success of the event. Thank you all!

Participants echoed Campbell’s sentiments, expressing their appreciation for both the challenge of the race and the cause it supports. “It’s great to be part of something that not only pushes my limits but also helps protect this beautiful area,” said one rider at the St. Margaret’s Chapel feed station, who completed the 115 km route. “The energy out here is incredible, and I can’t wait for next year!”

At the finish line in Lion’s Head, riders celebrated their accomplishments with food and camaraderie hosted by the Rotary Club from Lions Head and local beer provided by Tagwerks Brewery. We also held our Gravel Gran Fondo raffle draw for the Pulse SUP (ticket #0091), Peloton Painting (ticket #0764), Golf for Two (ticket #0891) and Stained Glass (ticket #0014). All winners have been notified and provided instructions on how to claim their prizes.

The Bruce Peninsula Gravel Gran Fondo proved once again that the thrill of cycling, the beauty of nature, and community spirit can create a powerful and impactful event.

With plans already underway for next year’s race, the Bruce Peninsula Gravel Gran Fondo promises to continue growing in popularity, drawing even more cyclists eager to take on the challenge while supporting a worthy cause. Mark your calendars for October 5, 2025, and be prepared to join the adventure!
