April 1 marked the official anniversary of Bruce Men’s Shed (BMS)and we will celebrate on Saturday April 20 with a breakfast event. We are collecting donations of $10 at the door, please RSVP if you’re interested in attending.
Reflecting back on the first year, it has been a whirlwind and yet has been an incredible journey. The fellowship and camaraderie that is at the core what Men’s Sheds are has manifested itself in the new friends met, relationships bonded, shared stories, skills, and the mentoring given and received have been beyond expectations. To men out there of any age, please drop in and say hello. To wives, daughters, friends, please continue to suggest to your husband, father or friend to come out as well. Our group is whatever our members make it to be, and we encourage new ideas, suggestions at all times.
The recently announced Wiarton Homecoming Festival (August 3 – 4 in Bluewater Park) has a number of events planned, one of which is a Cornhole Tournament. The Festival organizers approached Bruce Men’s Shed to ask if we would be able to make official size Cornhole boards for this, to which we said absolutely yes! After the tournament, the boards will remain with the Rotary Club and the Propeller club.

A group of BMS members gathered at Scott’s excellent workshop in Oliphant to start work on these boards. You may remember that last year Scott hosted our birdhouse build-a-thon for Nature Conservancy Canada. Over the course of two weeks, we cut 4×8 maple plywood sheets into the 2×4 size for the tops, and ripped 1x8s to make pieces for the sides and legs. We learned about safe operation and use of a table saw, mitre saw and a track saw. Using a Kreg pocket jig, countersunk screw holes allow the side pieces to be glued and screwed to the underside of the boards to make a strong frame. We will meet once a week to continue the project.
Weekly: Monday Morning Coffee from 9-11 am,
Monthly Meeting: Third Saturday each month: April 20th, 9-11 am at Legion 202 on highway 6 just north of Ferndale. Doors open at 8:30.
