Located in the former Northwinds Restaurant Building at 2832 highway 6 in Ferndale, Bains General Store is open now, stocking basic food items including fresh produce and various household items. Co-owner Linda Bain says as customers come in and ask for something they are making a list and will be expanding their offerings.

Co-owned by brother-sister duo Linda and Neil Bain, the building also houses the newly opened Hungry Hiker Ferndale, bringing the Tobermory food truck’s well-loved menu to its new Ferndale location – including its famous Hungry Hiker blend of coffee. A sit-down restaurant, plus a drive-through window, will be open year-round at its Ferndale location. As business gets up and running, the menu and hours of operation will be expanded. There are plans to do catering and special events. Currently the restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

They expect to hire about 17 persons to work in the two Ferndale based operations.

The opening comes at a time when access to grocery items in the area were limited due to the fire at Hellyer’s Foodland, and subsequent temporary shutdown and renovations. Local businesses – such as Scott’s Home Hardware, The Shops at 84 Main, Rachel’s Bakery, Garden in Thyme, Bear Tracks Inn & Restaurant and By the Bay General Store in Pike Bay – have done a terrific job stocking essential grocery items to support their local community.

Bains General Store is open 9am – 5pm, 7 days a week. Hours will be extending based on demand.
