Shady Gardens and Some New Hostas

Submitted by Joan Regan

I really love my shady garden, however losing a couple of trees out the back has let some sun in… hmmm. Maybe some plants that like some sun will also like my garden. So I sent in an order to Hosta Full On and two days later I had some pretty sun-loving plants, and of course another Hosta too – Whirlwind, one of my favorites. Whirlwind is in a shady corner and the others are in some sun.

Having a shady garden, there is not a lot of different colours, so I got 2-3 cans of spray paint and now I have colour, and I am loving it. Some pots from small to not so small, a couple of metal chairs, and a small table too. Why did I not think of this before? I’m loving the look – BUT just enough now, I’m not going to spoil a good thing.

The Hostas I separated a few weeks ago are looking fantastic. While cutting them I cut a couple of small pieces off accidently, so I put them in a jar of water and they now have roots. A couple more weeks and I will pot them up. Hoping they will survive (fingers crossed), they sure are pretty Hostas.

Last year I potted up some ferns by themselves in pots and have tucked a few here and there in shady spots. Wishing I had thought of that earlier – they look really nice in the shady spots I put them in.

I have never taken my garden too seriously, so doing things differently just seems to fit in.

My snakes are back. They were hiding out in my soil pile and I guess I must have disturbed them. Now I’m seeing them in different places in the garden – so glad to see them. I was a Tom Boy as a kid, so snakes have never bothered me. I’m seeing three different ones, all Garter Snakes. Bonus – I’m not seeing any moles/voles. They’re doing their jobs I guess.

Everything is being looked after so I’m going to bed.

Nite all and Happy Gardening,

Joni
