The Wilson Home Building Centre Curling Bonspiel took place on Saturday February 11, 2023. Ten teams of four curlers each arrived early for coffee and snacks. The skips drew cards to determine which teams would play against each other and on which ice surface. The competition got underway at 9:30 am; shouts and laughter and the sound of crashing rocks filled the arena.
After the morning game we were hungry for the lunch prepared and served by Wilson staff and family members. It was a delicious meal of beef and chicken on a bun, salads, rolls and dessert.
After lunch we lined up to buy rocks – 3 for $10 and a chance to curl close to the “glass turkey”, a specially marked stone. There are 80 rocks in total so 79 chances to get close to that fancy one sitting out there in the middle of the ice surface. It was nowhere near the centre when we were done and there was great suspense as to whose rock had been dislodged at the last minute and whose was now the closest. We had to wait until after the second game to find out that Pete Hart was the lucky winner of a $50 gift certificate courtesy of Hellyer’s Foodland.
Pete was on a roll as he also won the door prize draw, a carved wooden bear, presented by Jeff and Sandra Wilson.

After two eight end games, the scores were tabulated and strangely we had two teams with the exact same high score. One team was skipped by John Sarnovsky and the other by Rick Sim. We do love winners so the prizes were shared amongst eight instead of four. All the teams were presented with a special “bouquet” of romaine lettuce – something expensive and useful! We also made a trip around the prize table to pick up an item of our choice, all provided by Wilson Home Building Centre.
Other teams in the competition were deMalmanche, Elliott, Hill, Wilson, McLachlin, Nantais, Hambleton and Weatherhead.
A huge thank you to Wilson Home Building Centre for sponsoring the Bonspiel, to the Rotary Club for staffing the Bar, and to Hellyer’s Foodland for the glass turkey game prize.
