 Public Speaking Contest Returns

Submitted by Elaine Sinha

As we start to turn the corner on winter and are thankful that so far it hasn’t been too bad, we here at the branch are pleased to have a new event taking place and an older event returning.

The branch is also getting a makeover in the form of a refresh of paint in the mainroom. This endeavour will take a few weeks to complete as the branch will be open for regular winter hours as this process is going on. We will try to keep the mess to a minimum but please bear with us as we spruce the hall up.

Full Moon Walk March 6

In recognition of International Women’s Day, there will be a Full Moon Walk on Monday, March 6. Please meet at the branch around 6:00 pm. The walkers will venture out at 6:30 pm for a walk along Bay St. to Trails End and back. Afterward there will be light refreshments at the branch. If you are able please donate to the Grey/Bruce Women’s Shelter. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Thank you to Jo Anne Lane, Summer Martin and Sara Gowland for organising this event.

Student Public Speaking Contest

After a hiatus due to Covid the student Public Speaking Contest is returning.

Contestants are divided into four classes:

-Grades 1-3 speech length 3-5 minutes

-Grades 4-6 speech length 3-5 minutes

-Grades 7-9 speech length 3-5 minutes

-Grades 10–12 speech length 5-7 minutes

The competition is open to all students on the Bruce Peninsula, however each student can only compete at ONE legion, either Tobermory or Lion’s Head.

Competition will begin at 6:00 pm at the Tobermory Legion on March 7th with March 8th as the snow day. For full rules and regulations for students who may not have received them from their school please contact: branch290pres@gmail.com for a copy.

We hope to have many students participate.

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2 dinner/hockey games. Sean Hurst provided an excellent meal both times and thank you to the dessert makers Jo Anne Lane, Sara Gowland and Elaine Sinha.

Also, thank you to everyone who supported the 3 breakfasts at the branch and to all of the volunteers who prepared, served and cleaned up afterward.

If you left hungry after any of these meals… actually that wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you for your support.
