The Peninsula Bruce Trail Club’s (PBTC) Board and I would like to thank the volunteers who attended the PBTC’s Volunteer Recognition Event on Saturday, September 25. Though the weather did not work in our favour, we still had approximately 60 people enjoy the afternoon at the new Maple Cross Nature Reserve at Cape Chin. We were careful to comply with Ontario’s Covid protocols for outdoor gatherings. Those that did attend, appreciated the outdoor camaraderie, catching up with fellow volunteers they have not seen for awhile and in some cases, finally chatting in person with new friends met through emails and Zoom.

Many thanks are owed to the community supporters who helped make this a fun event. Thank you to the Bruce Trail Club (BTC) for lending the Club Tents, supplying BTC merchandise prizes and Meghan Croll, BTC’s Volunteer Coordinator, for driving up to help with the event and meeting volunteers. The Lion’s Head Transit Authority and driver Scott Matheson for donating the bus shuttle which was greatly appreciated on such a wet day. Tru Foods for supplying delicious sandwiches and muffins. Earthbound Gardens who supplied tasty honeycrisp apples. Christian and Barbara Von Der Heide of Cape Chin Tagwerk Farms and Paris Beer Company for very generously supplying us with gifts including a fabulous Tasting Experience door prize certificate. Darci Lombard and Summer House Park for donating a lunch or breakfast certificate at the Shoreline Café. Teresa Purchase and Craig Chisholm of Cape Chin Micro Farm for their honey prize donation. Tom Hall for generously supplying every attendee with a candle or honey sampler. Peninsula Septic Service for the donation of the two porta-potties for this event. Diver’s Den for their donation of excellent prizes (hoodie, toque, t-shirt, snorkeling gear). Scott’s Home Hardware for their bird themed prize (feeder and bird seed). All of the helpers: Tom Hall, Laura Browne and Tim Wilson who spent days prepping the property/putting up tarps and tents the day of. Our Hike Leaders: John Grandy and Darci Lombard who lead/swept the event hike. Marg and Owen Glendon for overseeing the volunteer parking.

Thank you to the volunteers who could not attend and the many others including our generous donors who helped acquire the beautiful Maple Cross Nature Reserve at Cape Chin. The PBTC has over a thousand members and two hundred of those volunteer! Since 2019, the Peninsula Bruce Trail Club has made several attempts to launch a volunteer recognition event which were thwarted due to Covid. We are most thankful that we finally had the opportunity to safely gather together and once again say in person, how very lucky the PBTC is to have wonderful volunteers like you!
