January 2020 is all about a thank you going out for the wonderful support the Tobermory Food Bank received in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Many thanks to the individuals who donated to the Food Bank, the organizations, Churches and other folks who came together to donate.

It began with Tom Buckley and Dan Forbes of the OPP Auxiliary who collected close to 500 pounds of food plus some cash donations at the Peacock’s Foodland Stuff the Cruiser Event. This effort is supported by the staff at Peacock’s who prepare the many pre-packaged bags ready for donation. Staff from the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula, Bruce Peninsula National Park, and the Blue Heron Company contributed greatly with their donations. The Spirit Singers also donated from their Christmas concert. And the ongoing support from the proceeds of Trivia night at the Legion continue to assist the Food Bank in its work.

A happier Christmas was made possible for many families in Tobermory thanks to the Emergency Services of Northern Bruce Peninsula who collect toys and buy gifts to distribute to children and young people. It is the Tobermory Food Bank’s privilege to organize and distribute these gifts to the families.

We have had a wonderful response to our call out for volunteers, thank you to all of you who decided to join us. Our new volunteers along with our regular merry band helped with the Hot Dog sales at the Santa Parade. The weather even co-operated this year. Also, we all were able to work together to pack and distribute the Christmas Hampers.

We know that this year the cost of food and utilities is going to increase and that puts additional pressure on Food Security for those facing the challenge of paying for housing and electricity on a low income. Whether it be singles, families or seniors. The support and donations mentioned here enables us to assist those most in need in our community.

Due to the recent donations, our shelves are fairly well stocked, but with the winter months upon us, the stock can go out very quickly. Donations of cereal, peanut butter, and chunky style soups are always welcome, as is Toilet Tissue and Kleenex.
