Summer is here…all we need now is warm weather or I will be wearing a scuba suit into Lake Huron rather than my thong! (prayers on Sunday will likely be for a long cold summer).
I am happy to report that we filled the church on Sunday June 30th as we celebrated a combined Canada Day and Pride Day service. I was afraid that no one would come because of either working, or having company, or being away. However, to our delight there was a great combination of visitors and local folks and together we raised the roof singing O Canada and celebrated the diversity of this great country where we live. Many thanks to all who attended, shared our poster on Facebook and made beautiful affirming comments in person and online. We want to thank Peacock’s for creating a stunning cake for the occasion and the Bruce Peninsula Press for providing pride flags for everyone. Once again, I am reminded how lucky I am to serve this community and Tobermory United.
Bingo is into its full swing at the Community Centre for the summer. The doors open at 6:30 pm and bingo starts at 7:15 pm. Yours truly is back in the caller’s seat with strict orders to behave myself this year i.e. no swearing. There is a snack bar and a chance at a $500 jackpot. This is a progressive jackpot and must be won within a certain number of balls being called. If it isn’t won, the consolation prize is $100 for a full card. It is a great evening out and there are lots of other cash prizes. Players must be 19 years of age or older. The Legion Ladies Auxiliary host this event and proceeds from the bingo go to support many projects in the community.
The Tobermory Legion also hosts a Meat Draw on Saturday afternoons at 4:00 pm. You don’t have to be a member to attend and again it is a great way to meet people and help support the Legion and their work. They also host a delicious barbeque a couple of times a month – just watch the Legion sign for dates. It’s way past my bedtime on a Saturday night but I have heard there is a DJ at the Legion or “Club L” as it is affectionately known and lots of dancing?
Mark the date of Thursday July 11th at 7:00 pm at the church for the Spirit Singers concert. They are celebrating their 30th anniversary and will shower us with some new material and old favourites. The tickets are $10 and can be purchased from choir members or at the door. Refreshments will be served following the performance. It makes for a beautiful summer evening outing and a chance to hear some of our local peninsula talent.
Now that we have moved into summer, our attention turns to the Annual Chicken Barbecue that we host every Civic Holiday weekend. This year’s date is Saturday August 3rd at the Community Centre from 5 to 7 pm. We are always seeking volunteers for this event and prizes for our silent auction table. If you think you can help in anyway, please contact me and I can give you more information. The full course chicken dinner and desserts are amazing and we almost have the event perfected after more than 40 years of hosting. Watch for more details to follow.
As we hit the height of the season, our prayers are for safety on the roads and in the waters and that visitors respect and love this little place that we hold so dear.
