To the Tub with Love Annual Dinner April 18th

Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer

Tobermory United was the site of a wonderful service marking the World Day of Prayer on March 1. This service is prepared each year by writing teams in different parts of the world. The 2024 writing team was from Palestine, and so it was meaningful and poignant to hear the voices of Palestinian women, especially at this time.

Many church folk from the northern peninsula collaborated to celebrate this service, and it was delightful to work together. Not only that, but over $800.00 was collected in the offering to go to the Women’s Inter-Church Council, which not only supports the World Day of Prayer in Canada, but also distributes funds through grants to projects that support women and children all over the country.

A study on Brene Brown’s book The Gifts of Imperfection has been in progress at Tobermory United since mid February. This initiative is also a collaboration, being led by Pastor Janaki Bandara, Rev. Mona Goulette and me. Between 10 and 16 participants have been involved each week, taking part in reflection and focused conversations, most in person, and some via Zoom. One gift of the pandemic has certainly been the introduction of electronic participation in events when in-person attendance is not possible. The study ends March 21.

The snow has disappeared, the sun shines brighter and longer and Holy Week is not far off. Tobermory United is honoured to host a performance of the Easter Cantata Choir’s performance of “In His Place: Remembering Christ’s Sacrifice of Love” on the evening of March 24. We will also hold a Maundy Thursday service on March 28 at 7:00 p.m. This is a quiet, contemplative service remembering Jesus’ last supper with his friends. Preparations are also underway for the celebration of Easter on March 31. Can you say flowers? Can you say music? There will be an abundance of both!

Tobermory United is also looking forward to being part of To the Tub with Love, the annual dinner hosted by the four churches in the community in gratitude for the community’s support of the churches and also the Community Outreach Fund. Mark your calendars for April 18, 5 to 7 at the Tobermory Community Centre.

Blessings to all for meaning and joy at Easter!

Rev. Sheryl Spencer is minister at Tobermory United Church.
