On September 19, as part of the 140th anniversary celebrations of our community of faith, Tobermory United held an exhibition of altar decorations that have been made for the church over the last couple of years by Jo Lane. These creations were able to be commissioned because of a bequest made to the church by Jan MacDonald, who passed away in early 2023.

Many of the sets of altar decorations feature local scenery or images. The set for ‘ordinary time’ (summer and fall) features Flowerpot Island on the pulpit banner and Bears Rump Island on the Communion table cloth. Jo says of this set, “These pieces were inspired by our beautiful landscapes. This is what everyone comes to see! My grandfather was a guide. He had a boat called the Lynn D. and would take folks out to Flowerpot Island.”

The set for Advent (the four weeks prior to Christmas) features a lighthouse with the Bethlehem Star in the sky reflected in the harbour below. Swarovski crystals were used to depict the Little Dipper constellation and the North Star, well-known guides in the northern sky.

This exhibit of tapestries can still be seen at Tobermory United until Friday October 9. Drop by the church when it’s open, or call to make an appointment, 519-596-2394.

The Tobermory Thrift Shop will experience its final weekend of opening October 8, 9 and 10, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Thank you to the entire community for your ongoing support of this endeavour. The Thrift Shop has experienced a banner year, and what is left unsold will go on to support worthy programs such as OSHaRE in Owen Sound.

Save the date for the St. Nicholas Bazaar, which will occur November 28, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In preparation, Northern Twisted Roots will host their annual craft afternoon November 7 at 2:00 p.m., guiding participants in the creation of beautiful, rustic items to be sold at the bazaar. All are welcome to this fun and creative afternoon!

September has featured warm days and bright-blue skies. The geese and the Sandhill cranes are getting ready to fly. It is traditional at this time of year to offer thanks — for harvest and all good things in our lives. Tobermory United Church wishes our entire community a blessed Thanksgiving.
