Bruce Men’s Shed Improving Wood Carving Skills

Submitted by Gerry Tilmans, Team Leader

Fall has officially begun and we are now in planning mode for this winter’s activities. In November a small group of wood carvers will be teaching themselves how to make objects and figures (or kindling if it fails). Scale model building along with airbrushing and painting camouflage is in the works. The woodworkers will be teaching themselves how to make wooden joints such as mortise and tenon, dovetail, dowels and biscuits using power and hand tools. Sharpening chisels, lawnmower blades, scissors and more will be explored.

A recent donation from Rainer was an excellent wet grinder for sharpening but not losing the tempering of the blade from excess heat when being ground. We also have an order to build six single cavity bat boxes and plan to make a few more for stock, as well as a larger triple cavity version.

Completely unrelated to any of the previous interests, we will be exploring the Arduino microcontroller. These can be used for home automation, environment monitoring and data logging, and much more for a starting price under $50.

Drop in for Coffee Monday every week 9am-11am at Canadian Legion Branch 202, 6 Hellyer Road on Highway 6, 4 km north of Ferndale. Doors open at 8:45am.
