Well hello September! Already missing the summer sun, summer nights and a bit of the heat! There is still some time and lots of things to do at Tobermory Legion Branch 290!
The final Saturday night dance with DJ Maxx is September 5th! From 9:30pm to 1:00am (last call is 12:30am). Come on out and dance like no one is watching! There is a $10.00 cover charge.
Euchre is the last Friday of the month (next one September 25). Games start at 7:00pm. Every Wednesday is the Ladies’ Auxiliary Summer Bingo. This is held at the Tobermory Community Centre. Doors open at 6:30pm. Every Thursday starting at 7:00pm is Darts. Everyone is welcome. Every Saturday is the Meat Draw. Starting time is 4:30pm.
On September 12, make your dinner a BBQ at the Legion! Starts after the meat draw, which begins at 4:00pm. You can get a burger and a bag of chips for $15.00.
Congratulations to Stan McLellan on receiving an Honorary Legion Pin for all of his meat draw contributions! I hope you won a lot of the draws!
Royal Canadian Legion Week is September 13-19. Keep an eye on the outside board for an event that week.
A Stand Up Comedian will be at the legion on Friday October 7 at 7:00pm. Tickets will be sold at the door and on Eventbrite. This is an age of majority event.
The Legion is still open Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 3:00pm. Stop in and say hi to Raelene – the drinks are cold and the welcome is warm!
Remembering John W. Ransbury:
John W. Ransbury was born in Tobermory, Ontario on November 12, 1903. He enlisted in the Air Force on July 22, 1941 and served with the Marine Division – Air Sea Rescue in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia during World War 2.
Corporal Ransbury was medically discharged on April 26, 1944 due to back injuries and spent the next several months in hospital in London.
After returning to Tobermory, he operated the Ransbury Fish Company and later, along with is brother, he built one of the first motels in Tobermory. John also built a guide boat, and was a tour guide for fishing parties.
His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the 1939-45 War Medal. He was a member of the Tobermory Legion Branch 290.
John passed away in July 1973.
