Saturday June 13 we celebrated George Bowman’s 95th birthday at our branch with a huge turnout of family and friends to wish him well.

On Sunday July 12 we will be holding an open house to celebrate the 95th anniversary of Branch 202 as well as the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion. More information will be shared in a future article about both, but please mark your calendars. If you have anything you’d like to loan to us for that day to put on display, or some memorabilia that you’d like to donate, we will be happy to collect the information and make up an information card for that item.

A reminder that tickets for the Roast Beef Dinner on July 7 and for the August 11 Fish Dinner are available. Contact us to reserve yours before they sell out!

Our free monthly movie this month is Friday June 26 showing “A Complete Unknown” a story about Bob Dylan. We will provide tea, coffee and snacks. This event is provided in partnership with the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula’s Senior Active Living Centre (SALC) funding with support from the Government of Ontario. Doors open at 1:00pm, movie starts at 1:30pm.

On June 12 we listened to Let’s Talk Lunch & Learn guest speaker Kristy Kastelic of MTO who presented “Driving Safely into Your Senior Years”. In Ontario, there are currently over 2 million out of 10 million drivers over the age of 65. This age group is expected to grow by 1.8 million over the next twenty years. Those over 75 are about 2.8 times more likely to have an accident, higher even than ages 16-24 that are 2.4 times more likely to have one. Some things you can do to maintain your drivers license is to drive regularly, carefully manage your medications, stay active mentally and physically, and take a refresher driving course. Important to note – there are three official photo ID cards available in Ontario: the driving license, health card, and an Ontario Photo ID card available at the MTO office.

As an aside, leading up to this seminar, I’d heard from a number of people that there’s some new legislation coming to restrict seniors’ driving rights. Kristy assured us that this is “fake news” and there is no pending change in the works or being discussed.

The next Let’s Talk Lunch and Learn – “Let’s Talk About Senior Resources” with Francesca Dobbyn, Grey Bruce United Way, and Guest speaker Charlene Scharlach of the Lion’s Head and District Food Bank. Tuesday June 23, 10:00am to 1:00pm. The event is open to the public and free to attend, but please register with Sharron Colter at 519-793-3473 or at dshcolter@eastlink.ca. This series is sponsored by a 2026 Community Grant from the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula, the Northern Bruce Peninsula Community Support Advisory Action Committee (NBP CSAAC), the Council on Aging Grey Bruce (COAGB) and Legion 202 Lions Head.

Wednesday July 22nd is the next Lunch & Learn at 11:00am with Kim Follis talking about Financial Planning.

Our free weekly Tai Chi classes are Fridays, 9:30 to 10:30 am. This is open to the public, so if you’re interested just come out a few minutes early, and bring a dry pair of shoes with you. The focus of the moves are to stretch, improve balance, and of course, have fun. This is not a “hot” workout so casual wear is fine.

Our address is 6 Hellyer Road. Come out to play cornhole every Thursday at 1 pm, but bring your darts in case it rains. Contact me at branch202pro@gmail.com for more information about our Branch.
