Did you know that the tradition of the removing of one’s hat in the legion hall comes from the military tradition of the mess hall? In the military, when entering the mess hall all service members remove their hats so as to remove the obvious signs of rank, allowing all personnel to eat together as a unit without the protocols associated with ranking officers entering a room. This protocol was carried over when legions were established and has become one of the traditions of the Royal Canadian Legion.
However, as times have changed, legion branches have been changing too and a number of branches in the country have removed that regulation from their legion halls. This motion is currently up for a vote here at Branch 290. The motion reads that we permit members and guests to keep their hats on should they choose when entering the branch with the exception of Remembrance Day and formal dinners. It has been made and seconded and is open for discussion and a vote at our next meeting on November 7th at 8 pm. If you have an opinion about this or anything else happening at the branch, we strongly encourage you to come out to the meeting. Votes cast at the grocery store don’t count.
Also happening at the branch is the upcoming Italian night! Lasagna dinner with sides and comradeship, is being served on Friday October 27th from 5 pm- 7 pm. Tickets are $20 and are available at the branch, and can be purchased from Sean Hurst or Elaine Sinha.
Don’t forget even though things are quieting down in town and the boats are out of the water, the branch is still open Thursday – Saturday from 3 pm to 9pm. Come on out for some pool, darts or shuffleboard. Or just come by for a drink and some good company!
