Tickets will become available July 1 for the Tobermory United Church Summer Chicken BBQ which will take place Saturday August 1. The Chicken BBQ has been a beloved Tobermory tradition for more than fifty years! Tickets are $26.00, and each meal includes a barbecued half chicken, baked potato, sour cream, roll, coleslaw and dessert.

Though the meal used to be a sit-down affair, it’s now a finely-tuned drive-through pickup at the church in Tobermory. Meals are also delivered, with thanks to Peninsula Parcel, to a pick-up point in Lion’s Head.

To order tickets, please call 519-596-2227 or e-mail tucbbqtickets@outlook.com. For Lion’s Head dinners, please call 519-793-3119. Tickets often sell out, so order early!

The Tobermory Thrift Shop, an initiative of Tobermory United, is doing a brisk business this summer! The purchase of a sea shipping container has given the Thrift Shop more space to collect donations. As a result, the Thrift Shop has been able to expand its hours and is now open for donations and sales every day of the week – except Wednesday and Sunday – from 1 to 4 p.m.

In coming days, if the weather cooperates, the sea container will be painted white to match the old settlement church that houses the main area of the Thrift Shop. Many thanks to the 38 volunteers that keep the Thrift Shop running and to this amazing community that offers a steady flow of donations. The Thrift Shop is located at 7101 Highway 6.

Tobermory United offered a meaningful and moving Pride service on June 7 featuring the hymn “An Ocean of Love” written and arranged by Mary-Ellen Kish and Gwen Chapman and sung by Peter van Ryn, Michael Rouse, Pat Neuwelt and Rev. Sheryl. Each of the singers offered a reflection on a specific line from the hymn. The Pride flag has graced the entrance of Tobermory United for the month of June.

Summer in the Spirit, a joint initiative of Tobermory United and St. Edmund’s Anglican, whose aim is to “Build Community, Honour the Sacredness of Place and Celebrate Spirit,” will begin July 22 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., with a sacred fire, teachings and ceremony offered by Nawash Three Fires on the grounds of St. Edmund’s Anglican. This is a come-and-go event, with a potluck feast at 6:00 p.m.

Residents, cottagers and tourists alike have all taken part in Summer in the Spirit in recent years, which will continue every Wednesday evening through to September with events such as – Brews and Hymns at the Legion (August 12); Songs of the Canadian Spirit with Brian Taylor and friends (July 29); a meditative forest walk (August 5); a concert in partnership with Music on the Bruce (August 26), and more! Watch for posters!
