The weather was beautiful for the Hike for Hospice on June 7th! The annual fundraising hike was held at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre in South Bruce Peninsula, and it was a wonderful location for our hikers to experience.

The participants, volunteers, Hospice Staff and Directors gathered in the Meeting Room for registration and the “Kick-off” ceremony. Board of Directors Chair, Bill Klingenberg, opened the event with the Land Acknowledgement and introduced Heather Dunlop as the new Executive Director of Bruce Peninsula Hospice. Heather welcomed everyone and outlined how the afternoon would unfold.

The organization of this event was managed by Theresa Coburn. She introduced South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Jay Kirkland and Northern Bruce Peninsula Mayor Milt McIver and both expressed their appreciation for the great service provided by Bruce Peninsula Hospice.

Theresa read a letter of encouragement from MP Alex Ruff, who also expressed his regrets at not being in attendance.

Board of Directors Chair, Bill Klingenberg thanked the sponsors, hikers and those that made donations for this year’s hike. Thanks to the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre for the use of the facility and the staff that provided the hikes and made them so interesting with their commentary.

The sponsors for this year’s fundraiser were Bruce Power, EPH Tools, Walker Industries, Sunshine Drugs McKenzie’s IDA, and Middlebro’ and Stevens. We appreciate your support!

In the past several years, Bob Cunningham worked very hard to make the “Hike for Hospice” successful by making the arrangements for the event and collecting and inspiring donations. Although Bob could not attend this year, he was recognized for his huge contributions. Bruce Peninsula Hospice is so grateful for his assistance and support. Thanks Bob!

The Hike was followed by refreshments and a time to socialize.

A special thank you to all of our participants, our donors, our sponsors, the Bluewater Outdoor Education Staff, and Foodland Wiarton for the sandwiches and donated dessert trays.

We are close to our goal of raising $35,000 this year, and it would be great if we reached that amount by July 1. If you would like to donate, please visit our website www.bphospice.ca and click on the Hike for Hospice link, or stop by our office in the Wiarton Hospital! We are just inside the double doors to the left.
