To commemorate Earth Day 2026, the Bruce Peninsula Environment Group (BPEG) and the Rotary Club of Northern Bruce Peninsula hosted an afternoon of discussion, inspiring stories and hands-on activities for kids.
Local seed producer Megan Franken was on hand to sell her seeds, while there was also a seed swap as community members exchanged seeds and offered gardening advice.
The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association, the Rotary Club of Northern Bruce Peninsula and BPEG had information booths and showcased some of their upcoming activities.
BPEG is hoping to host a series of Repair Cafes in Northern Bruce and are looking for volunteers wishing to lend their skills to repair items and share skills. Persons willing to volunteer can contact BPEG at bpeg10@gmail.com

There were three feature presentations, each offering a unique look at the world around us.

Jim Kuellmer shared some of his insights on the beneficial aspects of composting. He highlighted techniques for proper composting practices and gave examples of some successful urban community composting initiatives.
Kristine Hammel of Persephone Market Garden shared practical insights and ideas on holistic decision making. She explained how she employed the holistic management framework to guide her decisions on her farm property. She shared some of her farming practices such as no till, crop rotation, intercropping, and the use of mulch and compost.

The final presentation was by Andrew Ryzebol, Scott Parent and Billy Shearer relating their first-hand experiences of their Fathom Strait Winter Crossing. They shared their special memories, photos and videos of their amazing five day winter expedition from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island.

Jan Mackie and Chelsea Lise of BPEG organized a special on-hands nature related activity for the Sparks and Embers. The enthusiastic girls participated in making pollinator seed balls and seed medallions.
