The Tobermory Thrift Shop, a fundraising initiative of Tobermory United Church and Tobermory Community Outreach, is hoping to expand its services this summer. The Thrift Shop, a hallmark of summer in Tobermory for decades, is able to consider changing its operating format due to extra storage provided by the purchase of a sea container that has been installed on the property at 7101 Highway 6.
Though in the past the Thrift Shop has been open for donations only on Mondays and Tuesdays, the possibility now exists to be open for sales on those days as well – if more volunteers can be found. Up to now, sales days at the Thrift Shop have been Thursday through Saturday only. Volunteer shifts are from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., usually one day per week, from June to September, but volunteers are welcome to serve more or less time than that.
For more information about this highly impactful work in the community, potential volunteers are welcome to contact Thrift Shop volunteer coordinator Steve Lindsay at tobermorydreamin@gmail.com.
During Holy week, the sanctuary at Tobermory United will be open to all for quiet reflection and prayer between noon and 1:00 p.m. March 31 to April 3. There’s a lot to think about these days, and the sanctuary at Tobermory United is sacred space to do so. A quiet and contemplative service celebrating Jesus’ last supper will take place on Thursday April 2 at 7:00 p.m., and a celebration of Easter – complete with special choral music, lots of colour and a light breakfast beforehand – will occur April 5 at 10:30 a.m.
Tobermory United is excited to host a concert by the multi-instrumentalist musician, composer and producer Jeff Bird, who will play his interpretations of the music of twelfth-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen on April 18 at 4:00 p.m. (see the article on page 17 for more information).
Don’t bother cooking on April 16th! Come out to the community supper hosted by Tobermory Community Outreach, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Tobermory Community Centre. This is a free supper supported by the churches in Tobermory in order to bring the community together in gratitude and celebration that we made it through a long winter! There will be ham, scalloped potatoes, baked beans (vegetarian), vegetables, salads and desserts!
