Submitted by Gerry Tilmans,
First VP, Public Relations Officer
On Saturday October 18 Legion 202 hosted our annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction, both were successful with all tickets sold out within a few days. We truly appreciate the organizing and hard work put in by Wayne and Barb Morningstar for this, and to every individual who donated an item for the auction. We had 55 items donated and there is not enough space in this article to thank each person.
We also thank the businesses that are solid legion supporters such as Wilson Home Building Centre, Barbara Dirckx, The Hungry Hiker, Peninsula Pet Supplies, Rachel’s Restaurant, The Blooming Lion, The Shops at 84 Main, The Princess Hotel, Peacocks Foodland, Hellyer’s Foodland, Wiarton Foodland, RONA Miller Lake, Moms Pizza Ferndale, Louise’s Haircare, By the Bay, Lion’s Head Pharmacy, Tru Food Café, Wiarton Inn, Garden In Thyme, and Top Notch Restaurant.
One of our veterans and long-time member Kim White was the 2025 recipient of the Ontario Veterans Award for Community Service Excellence. He has served in many positions and one of his many current roles is Parade Marshall, so you would have seen him this past Remembrance Day leading our members.
His legion positions include Deputy Zone Commander, Branch 202 President, 1st and 2nd Vice President, Sergeant at Arms, Parade Marshall, Sports Officer and Bar Manager.
“Kim has shown his dedication to youth education and development through the Literary and Poster Competition each fall, the Speaking Contest in the spring, district Track & Field events and the bursary program for the past 13 years. Through countless hours of volunteer work, mentorship, and advocacy, he has made a lasting impact on the lives of others and strengthened the fabric of our community on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula.” said President Chris Mawdsley.
November’s movie was The Last Rifleman, a true life story about Artie Crawford, an Irish World War II veteran who runs away from a long-term care home in England at age 92-¾ and somehow makes his way to Normandy for the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
December 12 we will be showing Top Gun Maverick (2022). No reservations necessary, just come on in. Doors open at 1:00 and the movie starts at 1:30 on the Municipality’s 12 foot screen. There will be popcorn. This movie has a 99% audience approval according to Rotten Tomatoes.
Join us on Mondays and Thursdays (Except the first Thursday of the month) at 1:00 pm for darts, euchre and bridge. It costs $3 to play.
Legion 202 is located at 6 Hellyer Road, Lion’s Head just north of Ferndale on Highway 6. Reach us at branch202pro@gmail.com
