The Royal  Canadian Legion Branch 202 Lion’s Head has a busy calendar at the end of October and for the month of November. Remember to pick up your Ladies Auxiliary meat pies at the legion on Friday, October 29 between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m. There are 1,300 pies ordered. Helpers to make the pies are always welcomed at 9:00 a.m. in the morning at the legion.

Darts will be played on Mondays and Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. There is a fee of $3.00 at the door. Cribbage is also played on Thursdays except the first Thursday of the month which is the membership meeting. Members are encouraged  to attend the meeting to participate in the discussion.

The  Lion’s Head Legion’s first meeting was in July 1931. Many Northern Bruce Peninsula residents are accustomed to calling it Swan Lake Legion. The Legion did not move to the Swan Lake one room schoolhouse until 1984 when the schoolhouse and the property  were  purchased from the schoolboard. Therefore, the Lion’s Head Legion is often referred to as the Swan Lake Legion.

As  November approaches, there are several dates of which to be aware. There will be poppy canvassing at  Hellyer’s Foodland and the LCBO in Lion’s Head on Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.  to 5:00 p.m. on October 25 and 26 and November 1, 2, 8 and 9. During this time, if you are able, please donate to the poppy fund and wear a poppy proudly. The donations from the poppy campaign provide funds  for the school Remembrance Poster and Essay contest, veterans homeless fund, “Leave the Streets Behind”, the Veteran PTSD service dog program, the Bursary program for higher education, the Ladies Auxiliary and Branch Charitable Foundation, funds for hospital, firefighting, long term care and senior residences’ equipment, Army and Air Force Cadet Corps, and the veterans and spouses dinner.

There will be a Remembrance Day parade of colours and laying of the wreaths at Monument Corners at 9:30 a.m. and at the cenotaph in Lion’s Head at 11:00 a.m. on Monday November 11, 2024. Everyone is welcome to observe the remembrance programs  at the cenotaphs.

Hepworth Shallow Lake Legion Branch 586  is reopening on Saturday November 2nd from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in a new building after a fire  destroyed their Legion. There will also be a dance at 8:00 p.m. for anyone who would like to attend the celebrations.

The first Darts for Meat at the Lion’s Head Legion will be held on Saturday November 9th at 1:00 p.m. Bring your own darts. You do not have to be a member. There is a $4.00 fee at the door and  $2.00 for each game.

The Lion’s Head Legion received an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to update the building with new flooring, new siding and repair of the east wall.  There will be a community celebration held at the legion on Friday November 15 at 12:30 p.m. with Rick Byers, M.P.P. for Grey Bruce Owen Sound in attendance. Mark your calendar so that you can attend and be part of the celebration.

The Lion’s Head Legion Branch and Ladies Auxiliary members would like to thank the many community groups and residents for their generous donations to the legion which continue to give the legion funds to update the legion and extend the life of the building and equipment.
