At Sources of Knowledge (SOK), we are dedicated to encouraging education and meaningful discussion within our community. We’re excited to announce a series of upcoming events, including a SOK Talk on Housing in partnership with The Meeting Place Tobermory, the rescheduled Bear Encounters talk this fall, and our highly anticipated annual forum in May.

Continuing our commitment to critical community discussions, SOK and The Meeting Place Tobermory are once again partnering to host a SOK Talk on Housing on Friday, March 28th, from 1:30 to 3:30 PM at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre (120 Chi sin tib dek Rd, Tobermory). Building on our October 2023 Housing Initiatives discussion, this session will explore key issues such as affordability, infrastructure, financing, and housing types in the Northern Bruce Peninsula. A panel of experts will provide updates on current housing trends and future initiatives, highlighting progress, innovation, and potential impacts on local residents. This talk is designed to keep the community informed and engaged as we work together toward sustainable housing solutions. Watch for further details and upcoming announcements on our websites and Facebook pages!

We are also pleased to announce the rescheduling of the SOK Talk “Bear Encounters” by Willy Waterton, now set to take place this fall. This illustrated presentation will offer invaluable insights into bear behaviour and biology. Stay tuned for the exact date and further details!

Our annual Sources of Knowledge Forum is set to take place from May 2–4, with this year’s theme: “FIRE – Respect, Knowledge, Balance.” For millennia, humans have gathered around fire—it has been central to our economic, social, cultural, and sacred lives. Fire is a powerful and essential force, providing warmth from the sun and the heat we rely on for cooking and survival. Yet, fire is also destructive, capable of devastating homes and communities. As climate change accelerates, conditions increasingly favour fire weather, leading to more frequent and intense wildfires. This presents a paradox: wildfire is a natural and necessary force, playing a critical role in forest renewal and ecosystem balance, yet it also brings destruction and loss. Understanding this dual nature is crucial, and this year’s forum will delve into the many ways fire shapes our world.

To explore these complexities, we are bringing together experts from multiple fields to discuss fire’s impact on nature and human life. Speakers will include:

• First Nations’ leaders

• An Anthropologist / Archaeologist

• Wildfire experts from National and Provincial forestry centres (Sault Ste. Marie & Peterborough)

• Bruce Peninsula Firefighters

• Parks Canada Forest Ecology specialists

• Municipal leaders & emergency planners

• Forest Regeneration specialists from British Columbia and Quebec

We invite everyone to take part in these discussions and expert-led sessions. Whether you’re interested in the housing talk, keen to learn more about bear encounters, or eager to delve into the complexities of fire at our annual forum, SOK remains committed to engaging, educating, and connecting our community.
