The annual Fall tradition of moving the boats at the Lion’s Head Marina took place on 11 and 12 October 2024. Strong winds halted the activity by 3:30 pm on Friday, however all the boats scheduled to be moved were out of the water by noon on Saturday.
Fifty-eight boats were lifted out of water at Lion’s Head Marina and stored for winter. As usual the boat owners and crews came out to support each other in managing the tasks of lifting the boats and dealing with the intricate tasks of securing them on the cradles.
It was a bit of a logistical challenge to lay out the boat cradles, as upgrades to the hydro services were being done at the Marina on the week of 7 October and the pavement was dug up. However the electrical work was completed and the area re-paved by 10 October, in time for the crane’s arrival on site.
Organizer Bill Loghrin says there were five more boats moved than last fall and there are 142 boats on the waitlist for getting a dock at the Lion’s Head Marina.
Another traditional Thanksgiving tradition for locals and cottagers is to come down to the Marina and see the goings-on. Cottager Sarah came out with her family, saying it is a “perfect activity to do with her grandson”; young Aaron agreed that seeing the boats being lifted was fun.
