October 16 2024 – September flew by in a flash. The extended summer weather buoyed everyone’s spirits and, in spite of the busy schedule, we made more bat houses, bird house kits, cornhole boards and more. I have a finished bat house for Marjorie in North Oliphant so please let her know!

The Ontario Flying Farmers Association held a two day event at the Tobermory Legion. I gave a short presentation about what the global Men’s Shed movement is about to their group. I expect that one day almost every town will have a Shed up and running, and there are resources available to help make that happen.

At the end of September we received a donation from a new full-time resident to The Bruce, who had been looking for a good home for his collection of Remote Control airplanes. He and his brother had a lifetime of bits, pieces, fixtures, kits and more to make and fly balsa wood airplanes. While we have many scale model builders in our group we have few with experience working with balsa, and this fantastic supply presents a whole new learning experience for anyone interested.

On Tuesday November 5 we return to weekly scale model building at the Legion (see below). Last year we ran from November through to the end of April as a weekly gathering with 5 to 9 members each week. We will continue teaching techniques of airbrush painting, along with building and painting railway model trains and now wooden planes and possibly boats as well. We have tools, glue, and paint if you want to drop by with your own model.

We held a pig roast at the Legion 202 hosted by our Men’s Shed guys. Many thanks to Joe Vanderzand for helping us buy a pig to roast, how to stuff and mount the pig and roast it. He had loaned us his custom bbq for the day. Next year we’ll try to pick a day that doesn’t overlap other groups’ activities! We targeted about 50-75 people and sold 62, and it went smoothly our first time out, as anyone who attended can agree with!

Photo: Thank you to Rick Krisko and Dave Drawbell for organizing and making the recent Pig Roast happen.

Every Monday morning we meet for coffee 9am-11am, and our monthly meetings are the third Saturday morning of the month, same time. You don’t need to be a member to drop in for coffee. Both are held at Canadian Legion Branch 202 on Highway 6 just north of Ferndale. Doors open at 8:30 all are welcome.

If you would like further information on how to get involved with the Men’s Shed movement, please contact us at brucemensshed@gmail.com or call Gerry at (519) 793–3005. There are no membership fees.
