In December 2020 Tobermory resident, Chantal Dufour, decided it was time to follow through on her dream for the floor covering in their master bedroom – her idea was to replace the carpet with a beautiful mosaic plan that she had designed. And so, it began with the removal of the carpet.
Ever mindful of wasted items, she planned on using ceramic tiles left over from projects she and her partner had previously done. There were not enough of those for this floor, so she asked friends in Tobermory if they had any leftover tiles. Many people did and were happy to find a use for them. With all these tiles Chantal began to work on her creation, a twisted wave mosaic – a masterpiece of design and construction. To begin with she cut the tiles into triangular pieces of various sizes, three inches being the largest. The room is 15 feet by 16 feet so many, many pieces were needed!
First Chantal laid out the arcs of the waves and then filled the waves in with tiles of various colours for the beautiful three-dimensional shadows. When she was happy with the design, each piece had to be picked up and cemented down. Chantal spent many hours each day on the project and finally, in May of this year, all she had left to do was to grout the cemented tiles. The project was finally finished mid-September.
On September 17th, the Tobermory Drummers were the first to see the completed floor and then on September 21st she held an open house for neighbours to see her masterpiece.
Congratulations Chantal. This floor has become a magnificent piece of art. What a shame to put the bedroom furniture back in the room!
