Summer in Spirit July 10 “Wilderness and the Human Spirit”

Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer

Summer in the Spirit, a joint initiative between Tobermory United and St. Edmund’s Anglican churches, has begun again in earnest! The first event was an all-day community fire on June 26 hosted in partnership with John Keeshig and April Jones of Nawash Three Fires. About 40 people came through the space in front of St. Edmund’s throughout the day, listening to stories and teachings, asking questions, visiting and sharing food. Who knows how long it’s been since a song of thanksgiving, accompanied by a drum, has so beautifully pierced the air at the tip of the peninsula.

40 people also attended a hike led by Caley Doran of Cape Croker Park’s Anishnaabe Cultural Experiences on July 3. With many thanks to Parks Canada, the group enjoyed a walk from the Visitor’s Centre to the Little Dunks Bay lookout, with Caley adding interpretation not only from his traditional teachings, but also from the present-day realities of such things as the effects of residential school on his family and community.

The series continues on July 10 at 7:00 with “Wilderness and the Human Spirit: Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening,” at the gazebo at the Meeting Place, 20 Centennial Drive.

Tobermory United has set itself a lofty goal for our annual Summer Chicken BBQ. We want to sell 740 tickets! Even though the Tobermory Thrift Shop only opened a few weeks ago, it’s having a banner year! Many thanks to all those who have donated their household goods and also to all those who volunteer! Mondays and Tuesdays (1:00-4:00 p.m.) are donation days at the Thrift Shop, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday (1:00-4:00 p.m.) are sales days. Volunteering at the Thrift Shop is the most fun a person could have! If you’re interested, contact the church at 519-596-2394 or tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca. The Thrift Shop is located at 7101 Highway 6.

In worship this summer, we’re going to play “Stump the Preacher.” The congregation has been invited to submit topics or biblical passages that they’ve always been curious about. For starters, we’re going to look at the concept of “To Forgive and Forget.” Is that actually a good idea? And what, really, does it mean?

Never a dull moment…

Rev. Sheryl Spencer is the minister at Tobermory United Church, 5 Brock St. She has office hours every Friday morning from 9:30 to noon. All are welcome to drop by for a chat or just to say hi!
