What a supportive community! Collectively you purchased 630 dinners at Tobermory United’s Annual Summer Chicken BBQ on August 1. We could not have done it without the volunteers and all the folks, who not only baked almost 700 tarts, but also used their gifts and skills to make this annual tradition a success once again. Most importantly, amid all the planning, preparation, running and tallying, we had fun! Special gratitude is extended to folks in Lion’s Head, who purchased 139 dinners that were delivered thanks to Peninsula Parcel. Next Chicken BBQ – May, 2027!
The Thrift Shop has been receiving a continual supply of donations and has experienced an unprecedented volume of sales. Some important dates to keep in mind: August 25 is the last day to drop off donations. For now, the Thrift Shop is open every day (except Wednesday and Sunday) from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., however, as of September 12, the Thrift Shop will only be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The last day of sales before the Thrift Shop closes for the season is October 10.
Please note also that August 31 to September 5, the Thrift Shop presents its annual bag sale: A bag of books – $10.00. Bag of clothing – $20.00.
On August 27, all proceeds from sales will go to the Fire Relief Fund for the residents of the Bradley Davis Senior Apartments affected by the fire there on June 23. The Tobermory Thrift Shop is located at 7101 Highway 6.
Summer in the Spirit, a joint project between Tobermory United and St. Edmund’s Anglican, continues with gusto! Almost 70 people came to the Tobermory Legion July 29 to hear Bluesky Day (Brian Taylor, Arnie Crittenden and Brian Osborne) play “Songs of the Canadian Spirit.” The evening was framed beautifully as not only uplifting for Canadians, but as an act of friendship for folks south of the border, despite what is happening politically.
On August 19, Graham Bland will lead “Conversations that Matter” around the fire at St. Edmund’s, 138 Big Tub Road. On August 26, Music on the Bruce, in partnership with Summer in the Spirit, presents music by Beethoven, Frank Horvat and Maurice Ravel at 7:00 p.m. at Tobermory United Church. This is a rare and intimate opportunity to experience classical music at the tip of the peninsula!
Summer in the Spirit, designed to “build community, honour the sacredness of place and celebrate Spirit,” ends September 2 with “The Last Sweet Bite,” a potluck of both food and poetry, featuring spoken-word poet Naomi Nwanyioma Abiola. 6:00 p.m., Tobermory United Church.
