On September 20th, Tobermory United will celebrate its 140th anniversary, tracing its lineage back to Methodists gathering in a rough-hewn building near the site of the current Tobermory United Church (TUC) in 1886.
The service will include some special music from the TUC choir and a potluck lunch following. Part of the celebration will be an exhibit, September 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., of the series of altar decorations that Tobermory United commissioned from Jo Lane as the result of a bequest from Jan MacDonald. These six sets of fabric art not only reflect the liturgical seasons, but often the local flora and fauna. All six sets will be on display in the sanctuary and all are welcome to come and go, view the pieces and talk to the artist.
The changing of the seasons means a shift in the activities that Tobermory United is involved in. Summer in the Spirit, a partnership with St. Edmund’s Anglican, that seeks to builds community, honour the sacredness of place and celebrate Spirit will wrap up on September 2. This final event will be a poetry potluck aptly entitled, “The Last Sweet Bite,” featuring spoken-word poet Naomi Nwanyioma Abiola. Bring a poem (yours or a favourite of someone else’s) and some food to share, 6:00 p.m. at Tobermory United.
The Tobermory Thrift Shop, heading to the end of the season, is so grateful for our supportive community. Lots of bargains are to be had at the bag sale, August 31 to September 5. Books are $10.00 per bag, and clothing is $20.00 per bag. Bags are supplied at the shop.
The deadline to drop off donations has passed, but the Thrift Shop remains open until October 10. As of September 12, the Thrift Shop is open Thursday to Saturday only, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
35 people – church folks and community members alike – volunteer their time and energy to the Thrift Shop. A BBQ was held to celebrate these amazing contributions on August 25. The Thrift Shop is located at 7101 Highway 6.
